Many countries are increasingly adopting E20 fuel—a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol—to reduce fuel imports, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and promote renewable energy. While the transition offers environmental and economic benefits, vehicle owners should also understand its potential impact on fuel economy and engine performance.

1. Fuel Economy May Decrease
   Ethanol contains less energy per litre than conventional petrol. As a result, vehicles running on E20 generally travel a shorter distance using the same amount of fuel. Studies indicate that fuel economy may decrease by approximately 6–8%, although the actual reduction depends on the vehicle model, engine design, and driving conditions.
2. Higher Risk of Moisture and Corrosion in Humid Climates
   One of ethanol’s characteristics is that it readily absorbs moisture from the air. In humid countries such as Bangladesh, prolonged use of ethanol-blended fuel may increase the risk of water contamination inside the fuel system if fuel quality and storage conditions are not properly maintained.
   Older vehicles that were not designed for E20 fuel may be more susceptible to corrosion in fuel tanks, fuel lines, seals, and other fuel system components. Modern vehicles specifically engineered for ethanol blends generally include materials that are resistant to these effects.
3. The “Sugar Attracts Ants” Myth Is False
   A common misconception is that ethanol attracts ants or bees because it can be produced from sugarcane or molasses. In reality, fuel-grade ethanol is a highly purified industrial alcohol that contains no sugar. Therefore, there is no scientific evidence that ethanol-blended petrol attracts insects.
4. Gradual Implementation Is Essential
   Countries such as Brazil have successfully adopted ethanol-blended fuels, but this transition took decades of investment in vehicle technology, fuel standards, and supporting infrastructure.
   Before introducing E20 on a nationwide scale, policymakers should ensure that older vehicles are adequately considered, fuel quality standards are strictly maintained, and consumers have access to clear technical guidance and suitable fuel options.
